Hello-
Just picked up a Farmall Super M-TA this past weekend. Can anyone verify that the hydraulic system uses a standard all-weather hydraulic oil such as AW46 or Hy-tran oil? I also own a Farmall 300 and Farmall 450 running AW-46 hydraulic oil in those systems for the hydraulics. The oil that is in the M-TA reservoir currently looks alot thicker than hydraulic oil. Thanks in advance!

Yes, and with it having the TA the lube for the rear end, trans and TA which all fill from one point use the hydraulic oil also.

This is a guess of course. The Farmall M tractors with the belly pump work best with 30 wt. motor oil. A little bit thicker for older hydraulic pumps.
Someone (previous owner) may have thought 30 wt. was supposed to be used in all Farmall M tractors. The Super M tractors used Hy-Tran back in the day when it
was available. I own a SMTA and use Cat. hydraulic oil in it. Just a little advice, I would flush the hydraulic system with the cheapest stuff you can find
and then use a good quality hydraulic oil of your choosing. Ellis

Thanks Ellis, that was going to be my next question.
What is the best way to flush the hydraulic system?
Any idea what the capacity of the hydraulic system is on your MTA? Thanks

Well I also am a S/MTA owner and have been since June 27 1990 and mine live on the Champagne diet . It uses Hy Tran in the hyd and the trans and rear end . Engine oil is The Low Ash 30 weight . With the amount of tractors and implement s that are SHARED everything uses the same hyd oil and think your saven money by buying CHEAP your not . We run two oils one for the gas and one for diesel and one OIL FOR HYD and transmissions . THE ONLY EXCEPTION to this is the Skid Steer as it uses engine oil for EVERYTHING in a 10W30 III

Jesse My owner's manual says approximately 7 quarts. If it is necessary to flush the system, never use kerosene or other oils. Quote from owner's
manual. The reservoir is filled to the proper level when the fluid is visible in the filler opening. Another quote from owner's manual. Keep in mind that when
you switch implements you can contaminate the system. For instance a borrowed disc. Ellis

That makes me wonder.... Is the T/A in a separate sealed housing on those MTA's? Seems to me IH had an additive at one point to add to the regular gear lube. And what was the additive? Some type of thinner?

When they FIRST came OUT they ran 90W with the little bottle of snake oil BUT in cold weather the ramp and rollers would not always take hold . Then came the Hy Tran . The T/A runs in Oil from the trans/ rear end BUT the T/A clutch is DRY . I was 8 when the S/MTA came out and saw one on demo at my Uncles during tater harvest on the two row John Deere digger .

Thanks for all the info everyone! I will be working on the MTA this weekend.
One last question, what is the consensus on using diesel fuel to flush the transmission and TA housing? I would like to fill with about 10 gallons of diesel and drive the tractor around the yard for a bit to clean out the transmission before putting in new oil. Is the diesel fuel enough to lubricate all the bearings long enough to accomplish this task?

After the heavy and a little lighter weight gear oil they used 10-w engine oil with one quart of IH torque amplifier transmission
lubricant to each 4 gallons of oil and then on to hytran. All I will say about flushing is they will be a gallon or more of what's in
the housings that won't drain out the drain plugs. No hydraulics in the SMTA drive housings so I don't see a problem with using a
good transmission and hydraulic oil that meets specs. Just keep moisture from building up in the oil. Most not worked like the main
tractor now.

I am strictly of the "dump and refill" mentality, regardless of what comes out. Running diesel in a transmission, even for a short while, just does not give me a good feeling.
What do you do with the 10 gallons of contaminated diesel fuel? You don't dare put it in a tractor's fuel tank, even an old one. I wouldn't run it in an oil furnace, or a torpedo heater. Most people don't have waste oil furnaces/burners/heaters. Nobody will take it, as auto parts stores are only obligated to take used engine oil. One whiff of the bucket, "That's diesel! We can't take that! What kind of bull**** are you trying to pull? GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE I CALL THE COPS!" Yup, that happened.
